# Our Thoughts on the Conversation Around Microplastics

You may have noticed that [microplastics](/content/articles/what-are-microplastics-and-how-do-they-affect-us/index.html) are suddenly everywhere in the conversation—from headlines to social media to everyday discussions. What was once a niche environmental topic is now becoming a much more visible part of how we think about our human health.

Scientists have detected these tiny plastic particles in the human body—including our blood, organs, breast milk, and reproductive fluids—and these discoveries are raising important questions about plastic exposure’s effect on human health.

As microplastic awareness grows, we see it as an important moment to zoom in on what scientists are finding—and discuss why this conversation matters for all of us.

## **What Scientists Are Finding About Microplastics**

Over the past several years, researchers have begun detecting microplastics in different tissues of the human body. While scientists are still determining what these findings may mean for long-term health, their discoveries highlight how widespread microplastic exposure has become.

Researchers have identified microplastics in human:

- Lungs and placenta (Jenner et al., 2023; Ragusa et al., 2021).
- Blood (Leslie et al., _Environment International_, 2022).
- Breast milk (Ragusa et al., _Polymers_, 2022).
- Organs (University of New Mexico, 2024).
- Ovarian follicular fluid (Montano, Luigi et al., 2025).

## **Small Ways to Reduce Microplastic Exposure**

While research is still evolving, there are [a few simple ways people can reduce everyday plastic exposure](/content/articles/5-simple-ways-to-minimize-microplastic-exposure/index.html):

- Avoid reheating food in plastic containers
- Use glass or stainless steel water bottles
- Choose reusable cloth or canvas bags and metal or bamboo utensils
- Opt for clothing made from natural fibers like cotton or wool
- Look for products intentionally designed to minimize unnecessary plastic packaging

These small changes won’t eliminate plastic exposure entirely, but they can help reduce how much plastic you interact with in daily life.

What started as an environmental issue is now a matter of human health as well.
