Fall Cleaning Checklist: Eco-Friendly Tips for a Cozy Home

As the leaves change and the air gets cooler, it’s the perfect time for a fall reset.

In fall, we tend to stay inside more, making a clean and healthy home even more important. Dust, allergens, and germs can build up quickly, lowering the air quality in our homes and affecting our health—not to mention, it’s the thick of cold and flu season.

Perhaps most importantly, getting cozy is always easier when your space feels clean and prepped, so this year we’re giving you a few eco-friendly methods to incorporate into your fall home care routine!

Before You Clean

Declutter and Donate Unwanted Items
One of the first steps in a complete fall cleaning routine is decluttering and making your space more organized. Go through every room and assess what you have lying around—pay special attention to closets, shelves, and cabinets. Ask yourself which items you use or enjoy and which ones are just taking up space.

Consider donating any unwanted clothes, books, and household items to local charities or thrift stores to help those in need while you clear your home (Tips for making your style more sustainable)! You can also reduce waste by having a garage sale or throwing a swap with friends or family.

Stock Up on Safer Cleaning Solutions
Ditch the harsh chemicals and choose safer cleaning solutions for a healthier home and planet. Many common ingredients, like white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice, can clean well without the harmful toxins found in traditional cleaning products. You can also always count on Blueland’s cleaning products to get the job done with safe, effective, better for you, and better for planet ingredients. Bonus? They’re all designed to be reused and refilled forever with 100% plastic-free tablets.

Eco Cleaning Tips for Every Room

#1: Living Room

Start by opening curtains or blinds to let in natural light and fresh air. This small step can make your living room feel brighter.
Dust surfaces, blinds, light fixtures, and ceiling fans.
Vacuuming all carpets with a home vacuum or consider professional cleaning.
Clean glass and windows and walls.
Rearrange and tidy bookshelves and your coffee table.

#2: Kitchen

Wipe down countertops and surfaces in the kitchen to remove grease and grime (How to clean glass stove tops).
Make a paste with baking soda (or Blueland Dish Soap) and water to tackle tough, baked-on stains in the oven and the microwave. Allow the solution to sit for a few hours before wiping it off.
Freshen up your refrigerator with a small plate or bowl of baking soda to absorb any odors.

#3: Bedroom

Wash all your bedding and blankets to get rid of allergens and dust mites. Consider using dryer balls instead of dryer sheets, which may have chemicals that can irritate the skin.
If you have allergies, switch out your existing bedding for organic materials like cotton or bamboo.

#4: Bathroom

Deep clean your toilet bowl to prevent odors and bacteria buildup.
Clean faucets and sinks, paying special attention to tough nooks and crannies and rings around the drain.
Run bath mats and rugs through a laundry cycle. Dry fully before placing them back in your bathroom.
